The Best Places For Free Computer Science Training Courses, Certificates and Degrees

You might be surprised at the amount and quality of free online resources for Computer Science Training.  You might expect Google to offer free quality training but did you know that you can get the same courses taught in the classroom for free from such places as Harvard, MIT, and The University of California at Berkley?  Amazing but true.

Google Code University

Google Code University has top notch courses in coding that are very relevant in the area of Web Programming, and Mobile content.  If you are interested in Web or Mobile Development, Google Code University should be one of your primary bookmarks.  

edX

edX -edX is a joint venture between the some of the finest Universities in the world, including MIT, Harvard, Georgetown and The University of Texas.  It is a relatively new initiative but the courses offered are already impressive.  Examples of Computer Science courses offered are Quantum Mechanics and Quantum Computation, Software as a Science, Foundations of Computer Graphics and Artificial Intelligence.

MIT OpenCourseware

MIT OpenCourseware is one of the oldest and best free Online Education websites in the Internet today.  It has been online since 2002 and contains almost 2000 courses from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology or MIT that are free for anybody to take.  These are actual courses that have been taught to paying students at MIT.  The Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department offer plenty of great courses.   

 

Webcasts at UC Berkley

Webcasts at UC Berkley - The Webcasts at UC Berkley offer you a chance to view Online Video lectures of UC Berkley courses.  These are particularly useful for people who excel in a classroom lecture environment.  The classes are setup where you can view each course from the beginning lecture all the way to the end.  Very simple and straight forward.  The catalog of Computer Science courses is quite extensive.

OpenCourseWare (OCW) Consortium

OpenCourseWare (OCW) Consortium is a consortium of free online courses.  You may see some overlap of courses you see in the other websites you see here but the do have unique courses that cannot be found anywhere else which makes them a valuable resource.  In particular they have courses in Linux that cannot be found elsewhere.  Go directly to their Computer Science catalog.

Free-Ed.Net offers free short courses in the areas of Computer Science, Information & Communications Technology, Artificial Intelligence and Game Development.  These are short courses and are not intended to be for Certification or College credits but they are still very good if you need a place to start or want to brush up your skills.

Online Education Database has over 100,000 free courses.  I did a little searching around and found some pretty useful courses.  A found a lot of courses on Adobe (Photoshop, Dreamweaver, InDesign, etc.), Programming Languages, Web Design, E-Commerce, Database Systems and many other Computer Science related materials.  Let the search form be your friend. 

University of the People

University of the People is a worldwide Tuition-Free Online University.  The University of the People offers a degree in Computer Science.  There is a small application fee of $10 to $50 to gain admittance into the University and there is a $100 charge for end of course exams.  These fees can be waved by various scholarships.
